A Letter to You

An open letter sits on a dust covered desk,
A small fold in the corner, a small tear at the heart of it all.
It’s a letter asking for forgiveness,
Apologizing for
The pain,
The tears,
And all the hurtful words she told you.

She hadn’t meant for it to get this far,
She hadn’t meant for you to find out at all.
And then you did and you couldn’t understand
Why she hid it from you.
Because she knew how you would act,
How you would yell
And how you wouldn’t understand.

It’s a letter where the ink runs
From where her tears fell.
It’s a letter, dated on the night
You left a handprint across her face.
She’s sorry you found out
She’s sorry that you never noticed
When she’d hidden herself away.

And in this letter that’s all tear-streaked,
She asks you to forgive her,
For all those things she’s ever said or done,
That have hurt you.
Because she needs someone to forgive her,
Because of everyone that matters,
She cannot forgive herself.

She pressed harder near the end.
When she’s begging for forgiveness.
Because she cannot forgive herself,
She will not forgive herself.
She wishes you all the best,
And she finishes off the letter; signed with love.
Because when she goes to sleep,
She will not be waking up again.
